Surfing at El Merón-Oyambre Beach

El Merón-Oyambre Beach is the jewel of San Vicente de la Barquera, an impressive 4-kilometer stretch of sand within Oyambre Natural Park. With the Picos de Europa mountains as a backdrop, it offers one of the most spectacular surfing experiences in Cantabria.

Facing Northwest, it receives consistent waves even in summer. Its multiple peaks are distributed along the beach: from El Farolillo —a long right near the jetty— to gentler areas ideal for beginners. The atmosphere is relaxed and never crowded.

The beach is divided into several zones: El Puntal, El Rosal, Merón, Bederna, and Peñas Negras. Oyambre, on the other side of the cape, offers smaller waves perfect for learning. Awarded the Q for Tourist Quality and Blue Flag.

Surfing at El Merón-Oyambre is a unique experience in Cantabria. It's the only spot where you can catch waves with the snow-capped Picos de Europa mountains as a backdrop, a postcard that attracts surfers and photographers from around the world. With 4 kilometers of coastline, El Merón is never crowded. Even on the busiest summer days, you can always find an empty peak by walking a few meters. This width, combined with consistent waves and a safe sandy bottom, makes it one of Cantabria's most versatile beaches.

The Oyambre area, on the other side of the cape, works as an alternative when El Merón has too much swell. Its waves are smaller and more protected, ideal for learning days. San Vicente de la Barquera, the medieval town flanking the beach, offers a gastronomic and cultural offering that perfectly complements the surf experience.

El Merón works with Northwest (NW) to North (N) swell, which is the predominant direction in Cantabria. Favorable winds are South and Southeast (S/SE), which blow offshore and leave the waves clean. The Oyambre area, west of the cape, is protected from the Northwest and works well when swell is too big for El Merón.

In spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November), conditions are optimal: 1 to 2 meter waves with shape and power. These are the best times for intermediate and advanced surfers. Summer brings smaller waves (0.5–1 meter) but still consistent, perfect for beginner lessons and relaxed surfing.

Winter can bring waves over 2 meters to El Merón, with epic surf days when the wind cooperates. On these days, many advanced surfers from the Santander area make the trip here, drawn by the wave quality and spectacular scenery.

El Merón is suitable for beginners, especially in summer when waves are smaller and the water warmer. Surf schools in San Vicente de la Barquera know the best areas of the beach for each level and take their students to gentle, safe peaks. The sandy bottom guarantees complete safety.

For beginners looking for even gentler waves, the Oyambre area (on the other side of the cape) is the perfect option. More protected from swell, it offers ideal conditions for first surf lessons. El Merón-Oyambre is located in San Vicente de la Barquera, 60 km from Santander (about 50 minutes via the A-8 motorway). San Vicente has bus connections via ALSA from Santander, Oviedo, and Bilbao. The beach is 2 km from the town center, accessible by car or on foot.

Parking is ample with about 400 spaces (free except in August). The beach has public showers, restrooms, a picnic area, and a seasonal beach bar. Being in Oyambre Natural Park, the facilities are environmentally sensitive. San Vicente de la Barquera offers all services: varied accommodation (from campsites to hotels), seafood restaurants, supermarkets, and a tourist office.
