La Concha Beach, Cantabria – Wave type: Soft beach break, lefts and rights

Surfing at La Concha Beach, Suances

The largest beach in Suances. Gentle waves perfect for beginners and families.

La Concha Beach is the largest beach in Suances and the perfect alternative to Los Locos when the sea is too strong. With over a kilometer of golden sand along the promenade, it offers gentler waves and a family-friendly atmosphere.

Due to its orientation, it catches less swell than Los Locos and is better protected from Northwest and West winds. This makes it the ideal spot for beginners and for big swell days when other beaches are inaccessible.

Notable waves include La Ría —a fast left at the jetty— and La Playa, with long rights perfect for maneuvering. Along the promenade, you'll find all services: restaurants, bars, parking, and accessible beach access. The perfect beach to combine surfing with village life.

Why surf at La Concha, Suances?

La Concha in Suances is Cantabria's wildcard beach: when the sea is too big or messy at other spots, La Concha always offers surfable waves. Its protected orientation makes it the perfect Plan B for any surfer, but it's also an excellent destination in its own right.

La Concha's great advantage is its location right next to the town of Suances. You can surf, get out of the water, and be sitting on a terrace having a drink within 5 minutes. No car needed, no equipment to carry if you rent from a local school. It's urban surfing in a charming coastal village setting.

Additionally, La Concha offers two very different types of waves: the La Ría wave, by the jetty, is a fast left that works on the incoming tide; and the La Playa area offers softer peaks ideal for beginners. This variety means you'll always find something to surf regardless of your level.

    Surf conditions at La Concha

La Concha works best with large Northwest (NW) swell, when wave energy wraps around the headland and enters the bay. With Northwest, Southwest, or South wind, the waves stay clean. Mid to high tide usually offers the best conditions in the La Ría area, while the La Playa zone works better at low to mid tide.

In summer, La Concha can be flat when swell is small, as its orientation protects it from minor swells. However, when a strong summer swell arrives, it offers 0.5 to 1 meter waves perfect for beginners. In autumn and winter, La Concha really shines: the big swells that make other spots unsurfable arrive here filtered and perfectly sized (1–1.5 meters).

Spring combines the best of both worlds: residual winter swells with sunny days and pleasant temperatures. It's an excellent time to surf La Concha with intermediate conditions.

Is La Concha good for beginners?

La Concha is, along with Loredo, one of the best beaches in Cantabria for beginners. Its waves are gentler than Los Locos (its neighboring beach) and the sandy bottom ensures complete safety. The central area of La Playa is where surf schools in Suances teach most of their beginner lessons.

The great advantage for beginners is the logistical convenience: being right next to the town of Suances, you don't need a car to get to the beach.
