Surfing at Loredo Beach

Loredo Beach is the natural extension of Somo and one of the best spots for learning to surf in Cantabria. With 1.7 kilometers of fine sand and protected dunes, it offers a quieter and more sheltered environment than its neighbor.

Protected from Northeast winds by Santa Marina Island, Loredo is the perfect option when the sea is too strong at other spots. Its waves are softer and more manageable, ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers looking to perfect their technique.

Loredo maintains a family-friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Besides surfing, the beach is famous for the Derby de Loredo, the traditional horse race held every summer on the sand.

Loredo is the quiet alternative to Somo and one of Cantabria's most underrated surf beaches. While Somo attracts most surfers, Loredo offers similar quality waves with a fraction of the crowd in the water. For beginners looking for a relaxed environment without overcrowding, it's the perfect choice.

Loredo's great advantage is its natural protection. Santa Marina Island acts as a barrier against Northeast wind, creating cleaner conditions when other spots are messy from the wind. This means that on days when Somo or Los Locos are too choppy, Loredo can offer surfable, organized waves.

Additionally, Loredo's family-friendly atmosphere makes it ideal for families with children wanting to start surfing. Schools operating here tend to have smaller groups and more personalized attention.

Loredo works best with Northwest (NW) to West (W) swell and South or Southwest (S/SW) wind. Being partially protected by Santa Marina Island, the beach filters the biggest swells and offers more manageable waves than Somo. Mid tide usually provides the best conditions.

In summer (June–September), Loredo is a paradise for beginners: waves from 0.3 to 0.8 meters breaking gently over the sandy bottom. It's the ideal time for first surf lessons. In autumn, waves gain size (0.5–1.5 meters) and consistency, attracting intermediate surfers looking to progress without Somo's crowd.

In winter, Loredo receives bigger waves but remains more accessible than other nearby spots. When Somo is too big or messy, Loredo usually offers conditions a step below, perfect for intermediate-level surfers.

Loredo is one of the best options for beginners in all of Cantabria, especially if you're looking for a quieter atmosphere than Somo. The waves are generally softer and the beach is less crowded, allowing you to learn with more space and less stress. The sandy bottom guarantees complete safety.

Surf schools in Somo and Loredo offer classes with smaller groups than Somo, which translates to more personalized attention per student. Loredo is located 10 km from Santander, about 18 minutes by car via the CA-141. You can also take the pedreñero (boat) to Somo and walk 2 km along the beach to Loredo, a very pleasant stroll. There's a regular bus service from Santander with a stop in the village.

Parking is free with about 200 spaces near the beach. Facilities include public showers, basic restrooms, and a beach bar. If you need to rent surf equipment, local schools have boards and wetsuits available. The atmosphere is calm and family-friendly, without Somo's high-season crowds.
