Los Locos Beach, Cantabria – Wave type: Powerful beach break, left and right peaks

Surfing at Los Locos Beach, Suances

One of the most famous spots in Cantabria. European Surf Reserve with world-class waves.

Los Locos Beach is the most legendary spot in Suances and one of the best surfing beaches in all of Spain. Classified as a European Natural Surf Reserve since 2012, this 500-meter beach break offers world-class waves protected by spectacular cliffs.

Its three main peaks satisfy surfers of all levels: El Huerto offers long, maneuverable rights; La Playa, in the center, is perfect for schools and beginners; and Sopico challenges the most experienced with hollow, barreling lefts.

With Northeast wind, Los Locos potentially offers the best waves in Cantabria. Access is via stairs from the cliffs, adding a touch of adventure to every session.

    Why surf at Los Locos?

Los Locos is not just any beach: it is a European Surf Reserve, a distinction shared by only a handful of spots across the continent. This recognition protects its waves and natural environment, ensuring that the conditions that make Los Locos a legendary spot are preserved for future generations.

What sets Los Locos apart from other beaches is the quality and power of its waves. Nestled between cliffs, the beach concentrates swell energy and produces consistent waves with exceptional force and shape. Its three peaks —El Huerto, La Playa, and Sopico— offer very different experiences within just 500 meters of coastline.

For intermediate and advanced surfers, Los Locos is a must-visit in Cantabria. El Huerto's rights are long and allow for maneuvers, while Sopico's lefts offer barrels on bigger swell days. But there's also room for beginners: the central area of La Playa has softer waves where schools teach classes in complete safety.

    Surf conditions at Los Locos

Los Locos works best with Northwest (NW) to North (N) swell and Northeast (NE) to East (E) wind, which blows offshore and leaves the waves perfectly groomed. Low to mid tide is generally the best option, especially for the Sopico and El Huerto peaks.

In spring and autumn, Los Locos offers its best conditions: 1 to 2 meter waves with perfect shape and favorable wind. These are the prime seasons for intermediate and advanced surfers. Summer brings smaller waves (0.5–1 meter) but still surfable, ideal for beginner lessons in the La Playa zone.

In winter, Los Locos can receive waves over 2.5 meters with great power. These days are for experienced surfers who know the spot well. With big swell, lateral currents can be strong, so it's advisable to surf with local knowledge or under school supervision.

Is Los Locos good for beginners?

Yes, but with nuances. The central area of the beach, known as La Playa, is where surf schools in Suances teach their beginner lessons. Here the waves break more gently and the sandy bottom ensures safety. It's a perfectly suitable area for beginners under instructor supervision.

However, the El Huerto and Sopico areas are more demanding and not recommended for inexperienced beginners. If you're coming to Los Locos to learn to surf, always choose a class with a school: the instructors know the currents, peaks, and daily conditions, and will take you to the most suitable area for your level.
