Surfing at Somo Beach

Somo Beach is the heart of surfing in Cantabria and Spain's first national surf reserve. With over 4 kilometers of golden sand and consistent waves 300 days a year, this beach break is the favorite destination for surfers from all over Europe.

Facing the open ocean, Somo receives quality swell throughout all seasons. Its multiple peaks —El Barco, La Curva, and El Camping— offer waves for all levels: from gentle whitewash ideal for beginners to long, maneuverable walls for advanced surfers.

Just 15 minutes from Santander by car or boat, Somo combines Cantabria's best surf offerings with a relaxed atmosphere and full amenities: parking, showers, surf schools, and beach bars.

What makes Somo special is its versatility. Over 4 kilometers of coastline offer peaks for all levels: beginners will find gentle, regular whitewash in the El Camping area, while intermediate and advanced surfers will enjoy long, maneuverable walls at El Barco and La Curva. With Northwest swell, Somo's rights can reach 200 meters in length.

Additionally, Somo has the highest concentration of surf schools in Somo and Loredo. This translates into competitive prices (group lessons from €35) and a varied offering that includes children's classes, intensive courses, and surf camps with accommodation.

Somo works with virtually any swell direction, though the best conditions arrive with Northwest (NW) swell and South or Southeast (S/SE) wind, which leaves the water surface glassy smooth. Low to mid tide usually offers the best peaks.

In summer (June–September), waves range from 0.5 to 1 meter, perfect for beginner lessons and novice surfers. This is the ideal season to learn surfing at Somo. In autumn (October–November), the first North Atlantic swells bring 1 to 2 meter waves with more power, ideal for intermediate surfers looking to progress.

Winter (December–March) is big wave season at Somo, with days exceeding 2 meters and conditions that attract advanced surfers from across Spain. Spring (April–May) offers a perfect balance: consistent swells with rising temperatures, making the water entry more comfortable.

Somo is, without a doubt, the best beach in Cantabria for learning to surf. Its sandy bottom guarantees safety, and the beach's width allows schools to operate without overcrowding. The El Camping area, at the southern end of the beach, is especially recommended for beginners: the waves break softer and with less power.

Surf schools in Somo offer group lessons (4–8 people) lasting 2 hours that include all equipment: softboard, wetsuit, and rash guard. Instructors are certified by the Spanish Surfing Federation and classes include accident insurance. Most students manage to stand up on the board during their first lesson. Getting to Somo from Santander is easy and quick. The most picturesque option is the pedreñero, a small boat that crosses Santander Bay in just 15 minutes from the Palacete del Embarcadero pier. By car, it's accessible via the CA-141 in about 20 minutes. There's also a regular bus service from Santander.

The beach has over 500 parking spaces (€5/day in high season, free in winter). Facilities include public showers, restrooms, several beach bars and restaurants, surf equipment rental, and multiple schools with their own shops. In summer, there's a lifeguard service and swimming zone signage.
